Toyota Ireland Recall Statement
01/02/2010

As of March 1st, Toyota Ireland have written to all customers affected by the accelerator
recall. We encourage all customers who have received a letter to contact Tony Burke
Motors immediately to make an appointment. Please note that all pre 2005 registered
Toyota vehicles are not affected by the recall

The specific models and production periods which are to be included in a recall due to a potential accelerator pedal issue is as follows:

• AYGO (Feb 2005 – Aug 2009) - Only applies to MMT's
• iQ (Nov 2008 – Nov 2009)
• Yaris (Nov 2005 – Sep 2009)
• Auris (Feb 2007 – Nov 2009)*
• Corolla (Feb 2008 – Dec 2009)*
• Verso (Feb 2009 – Nov 2009)
• Avensis (Nov 2008 – Sept 2009)

*Please note that two of the most popular Toyota models, the 1.4 petrol Corolla and 1.4 petrol Auris are not included in the recall.

We can now also confirm that right hand drive RAV4 and Aygo manual vehicles are not affected.

Any Toyota vehicle outside of the above dates is not affected.

No Lexus models and no other Toyota models are affected.

We have been able to reduce the initial all in estimate of a possible 26,000 down to a specific number of 18,130.

The Problem:

Toyota uses two accelerator pedal suppliers, Denso and CTS, depending on the model, production period and the production plant in which the vehicle is produced .The recall relates to the CTS pedal ONLY and is a direct response to the possibility that the accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in extremely rare instances, become worn. This progressive wear when combined with certain operating and environmental conditions, can cause friction in the mechanism to increase and intermittently result in the accelerator pedal being harder to depress, slow to return or stick in a partially open position.

The Solution:

Toyota’s engineers have developed, and rigorously tested a solution, that involves reinforcing the accelerator pedal assembly by installing a precision cut steel reinforcement which eliminates the excess friction that has caused the pedals to stick in rare instances.

Corolla Update Toyota is aware of customer complaints from owners of Corolla models in the USA.

This vehicle, 2009/2010 Corolla saloon is not sold in Europe.

The Corolla model sold in Ireland is a different car.

The media reporting appears to have followed a misunderstanding of what Mr. Sasaki (TMC EVP) said at the press conference on 17 February 2010 in response to a question from AP reporter.

The question related to customer complaints about 2009/2010 Corolla sold in the USA.

Mr Sasaki's answer was:

1) Toyota recognise there are complaints
2) We take every customer complaint seriously and judge each one at its own merits.
3) At this stage, for this specific issue, we have not been contacted by NHTSA.
Some media in attendance misunderstood that Toyota is studying recall. This is not the case.
